Illegal structures removed from Ulundi CBD

Ulundi central business district undergoing major clean-up to make area more attractive

ULUNDI CBD is undergoing a clean-up, starting with the recent removal of illegal structures.

Run by the Local Economic Development and Facilities and Compliance units under Ulundi Municipality, the campaign saw street vendors issued with letters instructing them to remove illegal structures before the operation got under way.

The municipality gave vendors a cut-off date to remove their structures or face hefty fines.

On deadline day, some vendors removed their mobile kitchens as by-laws do not permit them to keep the structures in the CBD overnight.

The municipality then removed mobile structures where vendors failed to adhere to the call.
Ulundi Mayor Wilson Ntshangase said they would continue the clean-up programme, saying,

“Everyone is aware that goods such as mobile freezers or kitchens are not allowed to be kept overnight in the town. The vendor must bring his or her mobile structure in the morning and take it back after work.

“They are also not allowed to park them everywhere. Vendors need a trading permit from the municipality and be allocated a trading stall where a mobile kitchen or freezer can be parked during working hours.

“These illegal structures sometimes house criminals as others sleep in these structures.”
