Icy, wet weather as cold grips South Africa

Snowfall to affect mountain passes, travellers urged to exercise caution

It has been an icy start to the week for parts of the country, which have been experiencing snowfall since Sunday morning.

This follows several warnings issued by the SA Weather Service (SAWS) for disruptive snowfall and heavy rains in parts of KZN, Western Cape and the Eastern Cape.

This as a cut-off low passes over the south-central parts of the country and is expected to result in snowfall over the high-lying areas, exiting the country through the south-east on Tuesday.

Disruptive snowfall resulting in most or all mountain passes closed, some communities temporarily inaccessible, as well as loss of livestock and crops, is expected in the west high-lying areas of KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday, 10 June.

“Snowfall over almost every province, with the exception of Limpopo, is expected. Some snowfall will be disruptive, affecting traffic flow over mountain passes – for example, the N3 at Van Reenen’s Pass on Monday and Tuesday,” the SAWS warned.

“There is also a risk of severe thunderstorms, possibly associated with hail and damaging winds over some provinces, including the North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and KZN on Monday and Tuesday.”
