Rough seas anticipated along KZN coast

Sailors, anglers and beachgoers warned of damaging waves expected to cause disruption at harbours along KZN coast

With a cold front passing along the KZN coast, heavy seas are expected between Port Edward and Cape Vidal tomorrow (Friday).

The SA Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 2 warning for damaging waves, which are expected to reach heights of 4.0 to 5.5m.

This could lead to the temporary disruption of harbours and ports, as well as difficulty in navigation of small vessels.

“Small vessels may be at risk of taking on water and capsizing in a locality,” said SAWS.

This follows an earlier warning of a cold front which made landfall on Wednesday.

“As the cold front passes through the Eastern Cape on Thursday, the surface high pressure system will extend its ridge behind it, resulting in cold to very cold conditions in places across the province from, Thursday to Friday (27 June).

“Snowfalls of between 1 to 5cm accumulation can be expected over the northern high-lying areas on Thursday,” the weather service warned.
