A man convicted of dealing mandrax was handed a 15-year sentence by the Madadeni Regional Court.
The sentence, handed down to Mduduzi Kunene (57), will include five years suspended for five years on condition he is not convicted of a similar offence during that time.
In October 2023, a joint police operation saw SAPS arrive at Kunene’s Madedeni residence which was surrounded by a high wall, razor wire and broken bottles.
Police entered the premises using bolt cutters, where team leader, Warrant Officer Gerald Mfanafikile Nyembe, discovered Kunene hiding inside a dog kennel.
Upon searching the premises, police discovered mandrax tablets, estimated at around R112 000, in the kennel and drainpipes.
Despite his assertion that the drugs had been planted by the police, Kunene was found guilty.
