Contact crime remains high in KZN
Nigh on 11 000 suspects taken off the streets in KwaZulu-Natal in June police operations
The police in KZN have reported the arrest of 10 872 suspects for various crimes during SAPS operations in June.
“Contact crimes remain high, with 3 278 suspects arrested, 1 559 of them arrested for assault with an intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and 197 arrested for murder,” said KZN SAPS.
“Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) units arrested 207 suspects for rape, and 19 were arrested for sexual offences.
“Two hundred and twenty nine suspects were arrested for unlawful possession of dangerous weapons, while 702 were arrested for common assault.
“A total of 371 suspects were arrested for malicious damage to property and 372 for shoplifting.
“For drug-related crimes, 1 856 suspects were arrested. Police visibility on the roads was maintained and 554 suspects were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
“Some 869 undocumented persons were also arrested during June.”
The police said operations in various crime hotspots are ongoing, with the aim of further curbing crime.
“During the current school recess, police will maintain high visibility as holidaymakers descend on KZN.”
