Illegal firearms found hidden inside funeral parlour

Tip-off leads to arrest of a 35-year-old man for possession of an unlicensed firearm

After following a tip-off, police found a 35-year-old man with an unlicensed firearm in a Mtubatuba funeral parlour.

uMkhanyakude Police Cluster spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Sibusiso Mkhize, said police were conducting Operation Shanela when they received the tip-off.

“The suspect was interviewed and showed the police a rifle, shotgun, magazines and ammunition that were hidden in the ceiling board.

“The suspect failed to produce licences to possess firearms so police confiscated two firearms, six magazines, and 373 rounds of ammunition of different calibres. He was then arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, and will appear before the Mtubatuba Magistrate’s Court soon,” said Mkhize.

uMkhanyakude District Police Commissioner Brigadier Jeros Thango commended the arrest, thanking informants for fighting crime at uMkhanyakude.
