WATCH: KZN DUI crackdown: Offenders appear in Richards Bay court

More than 200 motorists arrested in weekend blitz across City of uMhlathuze

The 226 motorists arrested for drunk driving in eSikhaleni, Empangeni and Richards Bay between Friday and Sunday are expected to make their first court appearance at the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court today (Monday).

The offenders were granted R1 000 bail on the spot and released ahead of their formal court appearance today.

The accused were apprehended during an operation led by Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officers. Court officials are currently processing their dockets, with each suspect set to appear separately.

In a statement, Transport MEC Siboniso Duma commended the RTI’s dedicated team for their firm approach, saying he plans to meet with them to acknowledge their ongoing efforts.

Duma says intensified weekend operations have contributed to a notable decrease in road fatalities over three months in 2025 compared with the same period in 2024.
