Wet New Year’s Day forecast for Richards Bay, strong thunderstorms in Pongola

Variable weather across Zululand region on New Year's Day and into weekend. Here's your short-range forecast.

IT’S forecast to be a wet start to 2026, as much of the Zululand region can expect rainfall on New Year’s Day.

This is in keeping with the latest long-range forecast issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) two weeks ago, covering January to May 2026.

Said Seasonal Climate Watch report indicates a short and weak La Niña state during mid- and late summer.

“The usual effect of La Niña on South Africa is for an increased likelihood to receive above-normal rainfall over the north-eastern parts of the country during summer,” said the SAWS.

“During late-summer and early autumn, most of the areas that receive significant rainfall are expected to receive above-normal rainfall.

“During mid-autumn, the north-eastern area of the country sees a reduction in rainfall climatologically, however, some central parts are still expected to receive above-normal rainfall.”

New Year’s Day in Richards Bay is set to be a hot 30 degrees Celsius, but with 63% chance of rain, while Friday will be a sunny 25 degrees. More rain is expected over the weekend.

Empangeni and Mtunzini can expect a cloudy 30 degrees on Thursday, with Friday bringing more sun and 25 degrees, and rain possible over the weekend.

Hluhluwe residents can expect a mostly cloudy 31 degrees on New Year’s Day, dipping slightly to 27 degrees Celsius but more sunny on Friday, with chances of rain on Saturday and a partly cloudy Sunday with highs of 24 degrees C.

Mtubatuba residents are in for a manageable 28 degrees C but cloudy on Thursday, dipping to 25 with patchy sun and 55% chance of rain on Friday. The weekend will bring 24 degrees and 65% chance of rain on Saturday and a cool 23 degrees C but sunny on Sunday.

Pongola residents should prepare for strong afternoon thunderstorms on New Year’s Day, after highs of 31 degrees C on the day. Friday will be a sunny 29 degrees Celsius, while Saturday and

Sunday will be cloudy and 27, with 55% chance of rain on Sunday.
