uMfolozi TVET College students protest over persistent power outages affecting Richards Bay

Sporadic electricity outages affecting parts of the City of uMhlathuze, most notably Arboretum, have negatively impacted the teaching and learning process at uMfolozi TVET College’s Richtek campus, where students’ protests entered their second day today (Friday).

uMfolozi TVET College marketing manager Bhekani Ndlovu said the situation is likely to have a serious negative impact on students’ academic performance, and urged local government to improve service delivery.

“We do have a back-up generator, but the recent power outages in Richards Bay have disrupted teaching and learning for the past two days. However, we expect everything to return to normal by Monday,” said Ndlovu.

He added that uMfolozi TVET College operates six learning institutions across King Cetshwayo District, and that when these facilities have no electricity, the mandate to educate future leaders of the country is negatively affected and could lead to unrest among students.
