Biking community stands firm as Sharon Uys’ alleged killer remains jailed

Sharon Uys murder accused abandons bail at Richards Bay Magistrates Court

Gathering outside the Richards Bay Magistrate’s Court on Monday, friends of murdered community member Sharon Uys called for no bail for the man accused of taking her life.

Riaan Botha (43) appeared briefly in court on charges of murder and theft but opted to abandon his bail application after the court heard how he was a wanted person in a motor vehicle theft case in Rustenburg.

The State made an application to postpone the matter for further investigation to 11 June, and for the outstanding post-mortem report, photo album and the Section 205 results.

Botha was arrested on 2 May in Pretoria just days after Uys was reported missing and subsequently found deceased in her bathroom.

The details surrounding her death are still under investigation, but her vehicle and belongings had been taken from her property.

As friends, neighbours and supporters from the biking community stood in solidarity for Uys at court, they all attested to her love for life, high energy, and for always smiling.

They let out a collective sigh of relief as the accused remains in custody, and will continue to show their support until justice is served.
