uMlalazi family grieving after house collapse kills son

Family mourns after Thursday's storm leads to house collapse in uMlalazi Municipality

A man was crushed to death when a house collapsed during Thursday evening’s storm in Mawudlu, outside eShowe.

uMlalazi Mayor Queen Xulu, accompanied by her executive committee members, visited the family of the deceased, Mhlengi Mpungose (24) on Friday.

His grandmother, Zibuyisile Mpungose, said there was heavy rain accompanied by strong thunder and lightning.

“After it had subsided, we went to check on him and found him lying under the rubble. We saw his feet sticking out of the debris. We managed to rush him to hospital, where he was declared deceased,” she said.

The family’s home was also severely affected by strong winds, and Xulu committed to assisting them, handing over groceries on the day.

Mhlengi will be laid to rest this Sunday.
