KZN lawmakers are set to visit three multi-million rand State-funded detergent production facilities, including one in eSikhaleni, as part of an oversight visit to the region.

The Detergents Shared Manufacturing initiative was launched in 2016 by the KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) with the goal of lowering barriers for SMMEs in the detergent industry and boosting the township economy.

Portfolio committee chairperson Mafika Sangweni said, since then more than R100m has been spent on the construction of cutting-edge detergent production facilities in various townships, including eSikhaleni.

“We want the production facilities to be successful, so we will be testing their functionality. These facilities have the potential to open significant business and job opportunities for large numbers of people if they are run well,” said Sangweni.

He added that the oversight visit to the eSikhaleni facility will determine if the programme is yielding the intended results.

“The Detergents Shared Manufacturing programme is one of the provincial government’s practical initiatives to encourage sustainable economic activity among previously underprivileged groups in the province,” said Sangweni.
