A cash-in-transit (CIT) van has been attacked and robbed along the R66 in the Mpunzana area in Pongola.

The heist occurred just before 7.30am today (Thursday).

According to an incident report issued earlier this morning, the armoured vehicle was conducting a scheduled ATM service when it came under fire by a group of heavily armed suspects.

The suspects, the number of which is unconfirmed at this stage, fired multiple shots at the CIT vehicle before using explosives to gain access.

Three guards were disarmed of their service firearms and suffered minor injuries. Police said the suspects used two vehicles as their getaway cars.

The suspects reportedly fled towards Magudu, with SAPS in pursuit.

At this stage, it is unconfirmed whether or not any money was stolen during the heist.

This marks the third CIT robbery to occur in the Zululand region over the course of one week.

The first incident occurred last Thursday on the R66 between Gingindlovu and eShowe, while the second occurred on Monday morning on the N2 near Port Durnford. No arrest has yet been made in either case.

KZN Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo confirmed that the Richards Bay Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit is investigating this morning’s CIT robbery, and said no arrest has yet been made.
