LETTER: Who pays for appliances damaged from power outages?

When my geyser bursts, my fridge burns out or my phone charger explodes from the frequent and unexpected power dips, cuts and surges, who pays for new appliances?

I firstly want to thank the ZO for the many alerts and news articles on Richards Bay’s disastrous electrical situation.

These regular and factual updates keep me abreast of the situation which has become more than a mere challenge.

But I don’t want to take this opportunity to add my complaints and frustrations to the stockpile; I instead pose a question to the City of uMhlathuze.

When my geyser bursts, my fridge burns out or my phone charger explodes from the frequent and unexpected power dips, cuts and surges, who pays for new appliances?

While most homeowners have contents insurance on their household appliances, this cannot be said for the many tenants who rent the roof over their heads.

So when we’re spending one third of our salary on rent, one third on medical aid, and the rest on car repayments, food and petrol, how can we afford a new fridge, stove or cellphone, or even installments on such?

As with the looted businesses claiming insurance from Sasria, and road users being able to claim when their cars are damaged on poorly maintained roads, does the government have any sort of funds covering the replacement of essential household items that are damaged as a result of unplanned, sudden power outages?

But I guess, if there was something like this, municipalities would do a better job maintaining infrastructure or fear of having to pay out millions to affected residents.
