Whether you’re a Barbie girl, a Ken fanatic, or just keen to see what all the hype is about, the first live-action Barbie movie is finally here!
The Warner Bros and Mattel film has been shrouded in mystery, with clever marketing executives only letting slip a few neon-coloured images and minimal tidbits about who is in it.
But the storyline itself, and the angle the story is going to take is yet to be seen.
Here’s what we do know about this pretty in pink movie.
1. It’s got a stellar cast
We’ve known that Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie are starring in the film for some time, but the remainder of the cast has been largely kept a secret – until now.
Alongside Ken and Barbie, there are a range of other Barbie characters played by Emma Mackay, Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, Sharon Rooney, and Hari Nef.
But that’s just the tip of the iceberg because audiences can also look out for Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, Rhea Perlman, America Ferrera, Michael Cera…and a number of other big names!
2. It’s got a top-notch director
American writer and director Greta Gerwig is behind the Barbie hype.
Her previous coming-of-age films Lady Bird (2017) and Little Women (2019) both earned nominations for the Academy Award for Best Picture.
When Margot Robbie came on board, she insisted that Gerwig write the script without interference from Warner Bros. or Mattel.
She wrote the script with her partner, another renowned filmmaker, Noah Baumbach.
3. This wasn’t the original film idea
The idea for the Barbie film was first introduced a decade ago when it belonged to Universal Pictures but then in 2014, Sony Pictures took over with Amy Schumer set to be the lead, re-writing the screenplay.
However, she quit for whatever reason in 2017 and Anne Hathaway was next in line.
With no progress, the film deal expired in 2018 and was taken over by Warner Bros. Pictures which announced in 2019 that Robbie and Greta were the actor-director duo.
4. Expect a catchy soundtrack
No doubt Aqua’s annoyingly catchy 90s track ‘Barbie Girl’ is playing in your head as you’re reading this, but hopefully it will be ousted by the latest Barbie soundtrack which is set to drop on the same day as the film.
Barbie the Album is set to include several new and original songs from more A-list stars including Dua Lipa, Nicki Minaj, Charli XCX, Karol G, Fifty Fifty, Haim, Ice Spice, and more. Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie are apparently lending their voices as well!
5. So, what’s it all about?
Well, that’s what today’s film launch is for – so that you can find out.
But from the hints being dropped so far, it seems that Barbie leaves the plastic paradise of Barbie Land and enters the Real World where she has to battle with the challenges of being a real-live woman (we can expect some dark touches here from Gerwig).
The evil Mattel CEO played by Will Ferrell appears to be attempting to get his biggest sellers, Barbie and Ken, back where they belong.
