Angler’s angles from ‘The Bay’: Summer fish are on the way!

With summer just around the corner, anglers can expect to see even more rays and other summer species

Over the past two weeks, the Zululand beaches have experienced a noticeable drop in water temperature, bringing the famous Zululand flat fish onto the bite.

Lynton Premlall from Inkwazi Angling Club had a busy day recently, landing several blue rays, longtail brown rays, and even a young blackfin shark that gave him a good workout.

Gerhard Viljoen of Mtunzini Angling Club also had a weekend to remember. While fishing in a competition over the weekend of 11 October, he hooked and landed a massive Natal stumpnose weighing 4.7kg, earning himself a well-deserved prize.

It’s not often you see a stumpie of that size – well done, Gerhard!

With summer just around the corner, anglers can expect to see even more rays and other summer species being caught along our coastline.

Top bait choices include mackerel heads, chokka, red eye sardine and bonito.

The best conditions are typically in off-colour water, especially after a few days of north-easterly winds.\

Competitive rounds begin

Looking ahead, this coming weekend marks the first Common Venue Round for the Zululand Shore Angling Association (ZSAA).

These rounds are among the most important events on the ZSAA calendar, as results determine selection for the various provincial teams.

In a Common Venue Round, all anglers fish the same stretch of coast during the same set period, truly testing their individual skill and adaptability.

This round will be fished from Kwambo old ramp north to Long Beach. Good luck to all the anglers taking part – tight lines!
