3 killed, 6 injured in Pietermaritzburg crashes
Three people died and several others were injured in two separate crashes in KwaZulu-Natal over the weekend.
Three people were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in crashed into a bridge on Payn Street in Pietermaritzburg in the early hours of Sunday, The Witness reports.
KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service said it was not clear where the vehicle was coming from, but it was headed towards the bridge.
Spokesperson Craig Botha said the three died on the scene while the driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
“At about 04:30 this morning our ambulance service responded to a single vehicle collision on Payn Street where a vehicle lost control and collided with a bridge, resulting in the driver becoming entrapped. Paramedics together with fire and rescue services utilized specialized rescue tools to successfully extricate the driver. Sadly, this incident resulted in three fatalities.
“One individual sustained serious injuries and received medical attention before being transported to the hospital for further care,” said Botha.
Meanwhile, six people suffered injuries during a collision on the R617 near Mpophomeni late on Saturday evening.
According to Midlands EMS, one person in one of the vehicles was trapped inside the vehicle and was in a critical condition.
“Specialised rescue equipment was used to stabilise and extricate the patient before they were transported to hospital. The other five people sustained injuries ranging from serious to moderate and were treated on scene before being transported to various hospitals for further care,” said Midlands EMS in a statement.
