Two Limpopo learners killed, over 20 injured in scholar transport bus crash

Speeding and reckless driving have been cited as a possible cause of the incident that killed two learners outside Mankweng in Polokwane.

Two teenage learners were killed on their way to school yesterday morning when the bus they were travelling in crashed into an old building.

The Department of Transport reports the incident happened in Makgopheng, Ga-Mmabolo, Polokwane when the driver of a scholar transport bus lost control and crashed into a building.

“Two passengers were killed while 21 others, including the driver, sustained injuries,” confirmed the Department of Transport spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene.

She added that speeding and reckless driving have been cited as possible causes of the incident.

According to the Limpopo Department of Education, the deceased female learners attended Sehlomola Primary and MR Mamabolo Secondary schools outside Mankweng and were from Spitzkop.

Education spokesperson Mike Maringa said the injured learners and the driver of the bus were rushed to the Mankweng Hospital to receive medical attention.

“Two learners were in a critical but stable condition, while eighteen were treated and released,” his statement read.

Maringa added that information about the incident is under investigation by the authorities.

Meanwhile, education MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya said teams of social workers have been dispatched to the schools for debriefing and to offer psychosocial support.
