Watch: Whale carcasses cause a stir in Durban

The sighting of three whale carcasses at the coastal city has brought out the curious and has raised some questions.

A scuba diver with 16 years of experience says he is deeply concerned about the three whale carcasses he saw within three days along the Durban coastline.

One of the carcasses, which was floating offshore, created a feeding frenzy for sharks.

Vinayak Maharaj, the owner of Umhlanga Scuba, said that while out at sea in Durban yesterday, he noticed the carcass of a whale that had attracted black tips, white tips and bull sharks.

He said that three dead whales in three days are unusual. “What is in our water that is killing these animals?” he asked.

Maharaj said the other two whale carcasses beached at Umhlanga on Wednesday night and Tinley Manor on Monday.

“The pic of a dead whale in Tinley Manor was posted in one of the fishing groups I belong to. Something is killing our whales and an investigation is needed.”

He said a post-mortem must be done on the carcasses that washed up on uMhlanga Beach before they are disposed of.

Carcass of humpback whale

Northglen News reported about the humpback whale carcass on the shoreline of uMhlanga Beach, which washed up last night.

When a journalist from the publication arrived at the beach today, locals were gathered in awe to take photos and shoot videos of the whale, however, they could only do so from the promenade as the City’s Parks Department had cordoned off the area.

She was told that, following dissection, the remains of the animal will be taken to a facility in Stanger where they will be incinerated.

Feeding frenzy

The Witness reported about the whale carcass that caused a feeding frenzy in Durban.

“There was a stink to it, and there were birds circling overhead and the sharks were consuming this whale,” Maharaj told the publication.
