Man dead after fight outside tavern

“They were then both rushed by a driver of a private car to the KwaThema Clinic for medical treatment.”

KwaThema – Sakhumuzi Sanqela (30) was killed after a knife fight at a tavern in the Ekuthuleni Squatter Camp on Saturday afternoon.

It is alleged a fight broke out between Sanqela and another man, who both drew knives and stabbed each other while outside the tavern.

According to KwaThema police spokesperson, Capt Thabo Sibuyi, the suspect (28) was stabbed on the forehead and the right side of the chest while Sanqela was stabbed on the left side his chest, left shoulder and on his head.

“They were then both rushed by a driver of a private car to the KwaThema Clinic for medical treatment,” Sibuyi says.

“An ambulance was called to transfer the two to Pholosong Hospital.

“Sanqela died after arriving at the hospital while the other man remains under police guard at the hospital.”

Sibuyi says it is not yet known what sparked the altercation between the two.

“At about 7pm, angry community members allegedly went to the shack of the now accused and burnt it down as they believed it was his.

“We can however confirm that the young man was renting the shack,” Sibuyi says

“The shack and all that was in it was destroyed during the incident and no arrest has been made regarding the fire.

“A case of murder and arson are still under investigation at the KwaThema Police Station.

“Anyone who can help the police in solving this case can contact the KwaThema detectives on 011 812 4600.”

Sibuyi urges residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
