Police call on drivers to be vigilant

“We have increased visibility and intensified investigations in the affected areas and all other areas in Duduza."

Duduza – The police are warning residents about the rise in the number of hijackings in the area.

Drivers are encouraged to be extra vigilant, especially when they are about to park or when sitting in the vehicle.

This comes after three hijacking were reported in the past two days in Duduza.

Duduza police spokesperson Sgt Harry Manaka says in the first incident, which occurred on August 7 around 8.30pm, a 54-year-old man was robbed of his new Ford Ranger double cab in Madonsela Street by two men.

“In the second incident, which took place on August 8 at about 8.20pm, two vehicles were stolen in Khumalo Street.

“It is alleged three men armed with firearms approached the owners of a white Range Rover Evoque and a white Mercedes-Benz, took their cellphones and drove off with the vehicles,” explains Manaka.

The police are not ruling out the possibility that the hijackings are the work of a crime syndicate.

“We have increased visibility and intensified investigations in the affected areas and all other areas in Duduza.”

The police say residents must not panic, but should note the following safety tips:

• Be observant and look around before you park or drive away.

• Lock all doors and windows when you get in the car.

• Lock all gates and doors after you park the vehicle.

• Report any suspicious vehicles or people standing next to your house before you park.

• Always have the emergency police number 071 675 7027 ready on speed dial.
