Car hijacker set for a long stay in prison

A member of the public alerted the police and the KwaThema SAPS spotted the van and gave chase.

A car hijacker was sentenced to 43 years in prison by the Springs Regional Court, says Capt Neldah Sekgobela, communications officer for Ekurhuleni District.

The sentence was a result of a hijacking in 2009, where the victim was taken from his car and loaded into a van.

A member of the public alerted the police and the KwaThema SAPS spotted the van and gave chase.

They were assisted by the Brakpan SAPS and the car was found in Brakpan, where there was also a shootout between the police and and the suspects.

One of the suspects was shot and arrested.

He was charged with attempted murder, possession of stolen property and unlicensed firearm in Brakpan.

“The docket was investigated by Sgt Mogashoa of Springs SAPS after he received it from Const Mulaiwa.

“The investigating officer collected all the evidence and convinced both the complainant and witnesses to attend the trial.

“The accused, Thozamile Mabaso, was found guilty early this month and sentenced as follows: count one (attempted murder) – five years’ imprisonment, count two (attempted murder) – five years’ imprisonment, count three (possession of unlicensed firearm) – 15 years’ imprisonment, count four (robbery aggravating circumstances) – 15 years’ imprisonment, and count five (kidnapping) – three years’ imprisonment.

“The sentences of count one and two shall run concurrently.

“The sentences of count four and five shall run concurrently,” says Sekgobela.
