Suspects arrested for vandalising ATM

“The suspects managed to flee the area by foot when they noticed the presence of the police officers, but the police gave chance and managed to apprehend them.”

Duduza – Two men aged 32 and 37 were arrested for vandalising an Absa ATM located at the Nala Street Shell garage with the intention of stealing money from it on Wednesday.

The two took advantage of the fact that the garage had not been operating for the past three months.

The suspects were arrested after the Duduza police officers who were patrolling the area noticed a red VW Golf parked next to the ATM.

Duduza police spokesperson Sgt Harry Manaka says when the police approached they noticed smoke coming from behind the ATM booth.

“The police also identified two men who were busy at the back of the booth in a bid to gain entry.

“The suspects managed to flee the area on foot when they noticed the presence of the police officers, but the police gave chase and managed to apprehend them.

“The police found two gas cylinders and a cutting torch at the scene,” he explains.

Speaking after the arrest, Duduza SAPS station commander Lt Col Bheki Mhlungu commended the police for their swift reaction to the incident and their bravery.

He further adds he is pleased with the arrest because similar incidents have been reported before in that area.

The suspects will appear in the Nigel Magistrate Court.
