KwaThema man receives lengthy sentence

“An investigation was conducted and following a lengthy trial, it emerged that the accused used an alias name to avoid being arrested as he had previous convictions and was wanted by the police in KwaZulu-Natal.

KwaThema – Sibisi Thokozani Ngubane (35) received a 20-year sentence for possession of an unlicensed firearm on Tuesday.

He was arrested on April 13, 2019, on Sam Ngema Street by members of crime prevention who were conducting patrols when they spotted a suspicious vehicle.

The KwaThema police spokesperson, Const Media Khoza, says when the police searched the car, a firearm with several rounds of ammunition was found.

“An investigation was conducted and following a lengthy trial, it emerged that the accused used an alias to avoid being arrested as he had previous convictions and was wanted by the police in KwaZulu-Natal.

“An additional two-year jail term was imposed for possession of ammunition and he was declared unifit to possess a firearm,” she explains.

Khoza adds the conviction comes after the hard work and investigations led by Det Sgt Nkhatho Raseboka from the Ekurhuleni Trio Task Team.

“The sergeant has been a dedicated member serving the organisation since 2005 and since he joined the task team, he has a total of 23 convictions with sentences not less than 20 years.

“The sergeant believes in the removal of weapons and the longer criminals are kept in custody it will protect the community and serve as a warning to others who are keeping illegal weapons.

“The heavy sentence imposed have sent a strong and clear message to would-be offenders that crime in the area will not be tolerated” she adds.
