Duduza – Duduza police are appealing to residents, especially the youth who are using the free Wi-Fi at municipal buildings, to be extra careful and vigilant during the festive season.
The call comes after numerous incidents of robberies were reported at their police station.
Duduza police spokesperson Sgt Harry Manaka says in recent months many young people in the community frequent the municipal buildings to access the free Wi-Fi connection.

However, this has recently been attracting criminals who rob young people off their cellphones and other gadgets.
“On December 4, a 15-year-old boy was robbed off his cellphone.
“The boy was out alone in the rain at Tandi Eleanor Sibeko Secondary School and while he had his hand on the fence, a man approached and tried to take his cellphone by force.
“The boy tried to resist, but the man pulled out a knife and threatened him, and then took his cellphone.
“The incident was reported at the Duduza Police Station and the man was arrested two days later,” Manaka says.
He says this was not the first incident in the area.
In November an 18-year-old boy was shot in the leg after refusing to give up his cellphone to robbers.

“As the police, we have intensified our patrols in the areas and always chase these young people at these buildings away at night.
“We are, however, concerned about the safety of these young people, especially after dark.
“We are calling on the residents to take extra precaution by being vigilant.
“It is advisable that children not be allowed to go to the Wi-Fi hot spots after dark or be alone in the streets,” he adds.
