While to some people mango is just a fruit, to others it is more than that.
“Mangoes have been a great part of my life since childhood.
“I started selling mangoes when I was in high school during the holidays in the rural areas.
“I have learnt to make extra cash from selling mangoes and through selling them I have managed to buy myself necessities and to lend a helping hand at home,” says street vendor Motsie Chauke.
For Manesa Mokoena, the fruit enables her to make some of her favourite summer dishes.

“There are some very tasty dishes one can make with the fruit.
“At first I wasn’t so keen, but after having tasted a sample of dishes I fell in love with the fruit.
“I now know how to make chicken and mango salad and chicken and mango curry,” says Mokoena.
The fruit is mainly famous for the South African traditional atchar.
