As the Basothong Vimba Patrollers in Tsakani celebrate three years, founder Bashin Malinga encourages the community to support them in fighting crime.

The patrollers consist of eight members, including two women.

Speaking to African Reporter, Malinga said the patrollers were formed to fight crime. He explained that the residents were losing copper pipes and wheelie bins.

Cable theft and burglary were also a problem. He mentioned that crime has subsided and the community have applauded them.

“One of our goals as the patrollers is for the residents to enjoy safe living. Security is our main concern,” shared Malinga.

Malinga noted there were times when patrollers had to defend themselves, adding that people do not fear them.

He indicated that they work with the police.

“We normally detain the alleged suspect and then call the police. When they get there, we hand over the scene,” said Malinga.

Malinga urged businesses and the community to provide financial support to the patrollers to buy equipment, like zip ties, reflectors and flashlights.

“We also need more members to join us because if we have more manpower, then we can arrive on the scene quicker.”

One of the patrollers and commanders, Mncedisi Dipoko, said he joined the patrollers to fight crime.

“If we work together with the community, we can end crime,” said Dipoko.
