Murder case against Ayanda Simelane’s suspected killer postponed

The court ruled for the case to be postponed until February 21, demanding the suspect's former lawyer to furnish the court with a letter informing them of his move or to make a physical submission.

KwaThema – The case of murder against accused, who is suspected of killing Ayanda Simelane, was postponed by the Springs Magistrate’s Court on Friday morning.

This was after the court was notified the accused’s legal representative has stepped down and there is a new lawyer representing him.

The court ruled for the case to be postponed until February 21, demanding the suspect’s former lawyer to furnish the court with a letter informing them of his move or to make a physical submission.

Dressed casually in black denim shorts, the accused did not show any sign of concern during the proceedings.

His lawyer had to apologise on his behalf for his dress sense.

Simelane was found murdered in May 2018 behind the rental rooms at 9 Mokhitli Street in Phomolo Section.

It is alleged the deceased went clubbing at Themba Tavern in the area with the accused on the night in May.

Family and friends of the murdered Ayanda Semelane outside the Springs Magistrate’s Court after her case was postponed.

That was the last time her family saw or heard from her.

After over a year of investigating, the accused was summoned to court in November 2019.

Speaking outside the court on Friday morning, Simelane’s distraught mother, Selina Simelane, says she wishes the accused would stop playing games to delay the case.

“He left with her that Friday evening and called me around midnight, asking if Ayanda was at home because he couldn’t find her.

“He was crying, even that morning when we went searching for her he was crying hysterically.

“He knows what happened to my daughter,” she adds.

Chairperson of One Strong Voice Catherine Mpungose says they are disappointed that the case had to be postponed.

“We are going to monitor the case to the end to ensure Ayanda and her family receive justice,” she says.
