Farmer partners with day-care centre for food programme

Duduza – Farmer and chairperson of the Ekurhuleni Farming Development Association Peter Mpye has collaborated with NPO Mabel Zozo Crèche to create a food garden.
The project aims to assist the centre to save costs and promote healthy eating habits for its beneficiaries.
The two teams started the project around May and June last year.
“Eating fresh vegetables is beneficial to one’s health.
“When you pick vegetables right from your garden, the vitamin contents are at its highest.
“You can also taste and see the difference between fresh produce and in-store vegetables.
“You are also reducing the risk of eating vegetables that contain harmful chemicals,” explained Mpye.

With the food garden, the centre will be able to raise funds by selling some of the fresh produce to the public.
Centre board member and secretary Ramotse Ramoasodi said: “We go to the market twice a week, which is costly as we are paying for transportation and stock.
“Having a food garden will not only benefit the children but also the survival of the centre, as Covid-19 has also affected us.”
Mpye said as an association they are looking to have a Farmer’s Day for all local farmers.

“At the moment, we need and are inviting the community to get involved and work with us to ensure the project is a success.
“We are appealing to local businesses to assist us with donations and farming equipment to make the work simple and easy to roll out.
“Things like tractors and Jojo tanks can make the work much better, while also avoiding costly water bills for the centre,” he said.
