Economic development at centre stage

Ward 85 Clr Sipho Sibiya addressed the attendees during a public meeting at the Faranani Multipurpose Centre.

Tsakani – Stakeholders gathered at the Faranani Multipurpose Centre on Monday to discuss economic and development matters with the community.
The meeting was attended by representatives from National Treasury and City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) representatives.
Residents were given an opportunity to add their views with regards to township development.
Speaking to the African Reporter, Ward 85 Clr Sipho Sibiya explained how this initiative is set to benefit residents.

“The public meeting was to assist in preparing a precinct plan to guide development within the Tsakani urban hub.
“This being part of the broader development and spatial transformation agenda of CoE as outlined in the Metropolitan Spatial Development Framework.

Community members attended the public meeting held by the City of Ekurhuleni with National Treasury members on Monday at the Faranani Multipurpose Centre.

“The beneficiaries of this precinct plan will be Tsakani residents and the surroundings.”
National Treasury was introduced for an effective implementation of projects which they fund through the National Development Partnership Grant of the National Development Programme.

This approach perceives South African cities as comprising two distinct but interdependent networks:
• At the centre of the primary network is the CBD of the city (and there may be a few within a multi-nodal urban system), which functions as the anchor access precinct.
• A secondary network feeds the primary network. At the centre of each secondary network is a set of significant urban hubs.
According to Sibiya, having a precinct would benefit local businesses, taxi owners, commuters and informal traders.
“Therefore, this will be developed with various public and commercial facilities that serve Tsakani and surrounding townships.
“Tsakani precinct will function as a town centre for Tsakani, Duduza and Kwa-Thema.
“In general, this aims to turn townships into areas where people can live, play and work,” explained Sibiya.
