Local athletes shine at national champs
Njabulo Sengwayo (16) won gold for the javelin throw and broke the national record.
Kwa-Thema – Kwa-Thema Disabled Sports Club athletes brought home 17 medals from the 2021 Toyota National Championships.
The 10 representatives from the team also broke three national records at the event held in Gqeberha from April 24 to 27.
Njabulo Sengwayo (16) won gold for the javelin throw and broke the national record.
“I am very happy with my performance. I stepped up, gave it my best effort and it paid off.
“I broke the national record for that event.
“There is no better feeling than that,” he said.

Sengwayo also won a silver for shot put.
Mivuyo Tabata (17) scooped two bronze medals for 100m and 200m.
“I can’t say that I am happy with my performance.
“I was not fit enough. I know I could have done much better if we were training as much as we used to in previous years.
“Then I could have returned with gold,” he said.
Tabata also participated in the 400m and long jump events.
Nthabi Sengi Phala (35) was also not impressed with her performance.
“I got silver for shot put and even though I made the top three for long jump in my group, I did not get a medal because I missed the minimum points to make the scoreboard.
“I feel lockdown tampered with my fitness and I know I could have done much better,” she said.
She stated she will put in more effort in training for the trials, which are expected to be held in August.
“I am very proud of this group.
“We got seven gold medals.
“The club will implement some new programmes soon, so we are still inviting people to join,” added coach Aubrey Mathibela.
He said the new recruits need to be classified before the end of June to participate in competitions later in the year.
