World Changers Candidates partners up with local stakeholders to launch a drug awareness campaign

KwaThema – On Tuesday, World Changers Candidates with its partners, supported by local organisation Hlasempho Community Development Projects, launched their 2021 awareness campaign against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

The launch took place at the Kwa-Thema Community Hall.

As part of celebrating 19 years this year, World Changers Candidates will be placing 19 addicts from Kwatsaduza into rehabilitation centres free of charge.

The event was attended by actress Buhle Samuels, who is this year’s social activist for the campaign, and Teko Modise.

Chairperson of the organisation, Lucas Mahlakgane, said they decided to launch the campaign coinciding with youth month as the youth is the most affected by drug abuse.

The awareness campaign will take place on June 26 at Kwa-Thema Stadium.

“We have noted with great concern the growing numbers of drug abuse in the area. Our youth have turned to drugs as a coping mechanism.

“We are inviting those who would like to change their lives for the better, to partner with us as we are celebrating 19 years of championing for drug free communities,” explained Mahlakgane.

Member of the local drug action committee and chairperson of Hlasempho Community Development Projects, Martha Ntshona, stated that drugs and substance abuse have proven to be the leading cause of societal and social ills.

“We are going to be embarking on a series of activities, which will bring about awareness and provide a platform for the community to get involved starting with the National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week from June 2 to 25.

“We are committing to assist those who want to be helped and to form long-lasting partnerships with them,” she said.
