Victim of crime helps addicts clean up their act

Kwa-Thema- A victim of crime, Martha Ntshoana has dedicated herself to helping drug addicts rebuild their lives.
Martha’s home has been broken into twice and her valuables were stolen by addicts in her neighbourhood of Tornado.
She says after the series of break-ins into her home, she decided to lend a helping hand to help addicts kick off their habits.

“Because I am a mother, I decided to open myself up to understanding what the addicts are going through and what led them to this.
“It pained me that there are many young people in my township who are sinking deeper and are living to feed this monster,” she explained.
The conversations she had with the addicts revealed that they started experimenting with drugs due to peer pressure, stress from home and unemployment.
She decided to form an organisation called Hlase Mpho to address some of the challenges that the addicts face daily.

She feeds them, offers temporary employment to keep them busy and helps place them into rehabilitation centres across the province.
She also helps the recovering addicts to reunite with their loved ones.
“Many of the addicts have messed up their relationships with their loved ones and on their return from rehab, they don’t have anywhere else to go to.
“Through our intervention, we can help rebuild their relationships,” added Martha.
