Security cluster members caution learners about substance abuse

Members of the security cluster visit troubled Laerskool Dunnottar.

Dunnottar – SAPS conducted a school safety campaign at Laerskool Dunnottar on Monday.

This was after they received concerns about substance abuse within the school.
The initiative was in collaboration with the Department of Community Safety responsible for social crime prevention, road safety, Department of Correctional Services, Social Reintegration Office (Community Corrections) in Nigel, social crime prevention and K9, Zone 3 social crime prevention and coordinators.
The campaign started with a search of the school grounds and classrooms for illegal substances and weapons.
The officials addressed learners about the importance of discipline and responsibility.
Correctional Services official, Tankiso Rantlha, encouraged learners to be disciplined and avoid criminal activities which may lead them to prison.

“Learners must not aspire to go to prison as they see it on TV or in the movies. This is real life and a lot happens behind the high walls. It is not a playground where one can have fun and be at leisure. People get killed and may even be sentenced further for the crimes committed in prison,” he explained.
He also cautioned learners against getting tattoos with meanings they don’t understand.
Rantlha added that they will be having aftercare programmes to ensure that the education and learning at the facility are carried out in a safe environment.
“It depends on an individual if they want to be rehabilitated or not,” he said.
Correctional services ambassador Themba Zwane, who is on parole after serving 15 years in prison, encouraged learners to listen to their parents and focus on their studies.
He strongly discouraged substance abuse.
