Phooko to join an iconic jazz musician on stage
The artist from Kwa-Thema will grace the stage alongside legendary jazz artist, Andile Yenana
Kwa-Thema-born artist Nico Phooko was on stage with the legendary jazz artist Andile Yenana and an award-winning photographer Siphiwe Mhlambi earlier this month.
The two had invited Phooko to collaborate with them on an Eastern Cape tour which moved from East London to Gceberha on March 3-5.
Phooko will also be featured by Yenana on Umngqungqo Wabantu on March 31 at the Margate Museum of Art in Margate, KwaZulu-Natal.
Phooko is a visual artist who does his paintings live on stage during performances.
“Umngqungqo is special this time around as Yenana will be featuring a visual artist for the first time,” said Phooko.
Phooko said Yenana usually features great jazz artists from around the world.
Phooko has been previously invited to artistically capture events such as A Tribute to Samora Machel, painting alongside world-renowned musicians and politicians who had come to honour the life of the late Samora Machel.
The painting was presented to Graça Machel, her late husband Nelson Mandela, and the Machel Family in 2014.

He has also painted live on stage with Africa’s great musicians, Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Sibongile Khumalo, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Ringo Mandlingozi, Joyous Celebration, Joe Nina, Bongo Maffin, Voice and a host of Traditional and Jazz Musicians throughout South Africa and abroad.

“I will be working with an iconic person. When he performs, I will be painting. I am ready for the day.
“I specialise in painting live on stage since 1996 and have been invited to a lot of prestigious events and performances with many of the world-renowned musicians and artists,” concluded Phooko.
Phooko’s live painting CV includes many award ceremonies, private and corporate gala dinners, conferences, weddings, children’s celebrations, music launches, and many more prominent events.
