Ndebele nations called to unite

The Ndebele nations attended King Makerana's annual event.

Kwa-Thema – The Ndebele community attended the annual King Jan Makerana Mabena commemoration in Vezubuhle in Kwa-Mhlanga on Saturday.

Various tribes from across the country, dressed in colourful clothes, attended the event. The king encouraged the tribes to be united.

The Kwa-Thema headman, Abram Mabena, said the attendees were reminded to hold on to their culture and share their teachings with their children.

“We are facing a challenge of substance abuse, especially drugs, in our communities.

“We need to go back to our roots and highlight the importance of family and culture because this will help us fight some of the social ills we face,” he said.

Mabena added that it is heartbreaking to see young people turn their back on their culture and adopt the Western culture.

“This tells us, as parents and adults in the community, that we have failed our children and they feel our culture is backwards,” he added.
