Hands off the tennis courts
Parents and coaches asked the community to take care of the tennis courts.
Kwa-Thema – The parents of tennis players are pleading with the residents to protect the newly renovated tennis courts from vandalism.
This plea comes after a group of boys were seen on various occasions playing soccer on the tennis courts wearing soccer boots.
John Nkosi, the chairperson of the Kwa-Thema Sparks Tennis Club, said they fear this will ruin the courts’ surface.
“There was a stage when the metro failed to renovate the courts until they were in a state of disrepair.
“As tennis players in the area, we had to negotiate and plead with the metro to fix the court until they finally budged.
“Ultimately, they responded to our pleas and the courts were repaired. However, the workmanship was unsatisfactory,” he added.

Nkosi said when the community members organised a street bash and fastened tents to the fence, the first two courts were destroyed.
“The wind blew the tents away, and the fence ripped off, causing damage to the tennis courts. Nine junior players were selected to be part of the Tennis South Africa Gauteng Development Centre.
“If members of the community continue to use the courts for anything besides tennis, these young stars who have the potential to be on the national circuit could miss out on their talent,” he said.
The parents and coaches of tennis players are appealing to the community to refrain from using the facilities for other sporting codes. They are asking the community to guard and take care of the facilities.
