Tsakane Primary School launches scholar patrol initiative

The school puts the safety of its learners first by creating a scholar patrol.

Tsakani – Tsakane Primary School recently launched their first scholar patrol in a bid to keep learners safe from oncoming traffic since the school is next to a busy road.

This comes after two learners were struck outside the school grounds last year. The school took the accident as an eye-opener and decided on ways to protect its learners.

The scholar patrol has 15 learners who are in Grades Six and Seven.

Tsakane Primary School teacher Thandaza Ndlovu said, “We did this to play our part in doing public service by controlling traffic, safeguarding our pedestrians who are mostly learners by helping them cross the street safely to and from school.

“We also hope this will encourage parents to enrol their children in our school because we think the safety of their children walking to school is the reason behind the decreasing number of enrollments.”

She thinks the scholar patrol will help their learners to have leadership skills and also put safety first even when they are not at school.

“The initiative is rolled out with the support and supervision of teachers. We close the road from 07:00 until 08:00 because that is when a high volume of learners are walking to school and again in the afternoon from 14:00 until 14:30,” she said.

Thandaza added the initiative is already getting a good response from the community members and some of the parents come in the morning to assist while others are sharing ideas on how to improve the initiative.

“We did not have any sponsors for this and we would like to ask anyone interested to help us buy more equipment and road signs.

“We used the school money to order only four cones for the road and the EMPD provided us with uniforms,” she said.
