Vlakfontein Graveyard robber arrested

The suspect was armed with a knife and demanded the victim's cellphone.

Duduza – A man was nabbed for the robbery of a cellphone inside the Vlakfontein graveyard on Tuesday.

The victim, Baphile Martins, was at the cemetery to clean her relative’s grave when the man attacked her.

Duduza police spokesperson Sergeant Harry Manaka said Baphile was approached by the suspect, armed with a knife, who demanded her cellphone.

“In fear, she handed over her cellphone and the suspect then fled on foot.

“Baphile followed him. She came across a police patrol car and informed them about the incident and a search ensued,” he added.

The man, hiding in the thick bushes nearby and was arrested. He still had Baphile’s cellphone.

The 35-year-old man was charged with aggravated robbery and is expected to appear in the Nigel Magistrate’s Court soon.

The Duduza Saps acting station commander Captain Amos Lukhele expressed relief at the arrest of this suspect but elaborated that the police will continue patrols around the area as there could be other copycats and would-be robbers in the area.
