Police fight substance abuse in schools
EMPD spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Kelebogile Thepa said they will be conducting school talks and searches of this nature across the City of Ekurhuleni.
Kwa-Thema – In a bid to get rid of illegal substances in schools, members of the EMPD Social Crime Prevention Unit and K9 Unit carried out safety campaigns at Kwa-Thema and Etwatwa schools.
This was in conjunction with K9 Unit officers, the Department of Social Development and the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA Horizon) from last Monday to Thursday at Sazakhele Primary School, BB Myataza Secondary School, Barcelona Primary School and Fred Habedi Primary School in the Etwatwa and Kwa-Thema.
The officers addressed issues around human trafficking, peer pressure and bullying, while further interacting with the learners who spoke about their challenges at school and how they are tackling their every day activities.

EMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Kelebogile Thepa said the EMPD Dog Unit conducted a school search at BB Myataza Secondary School, where three boxes of matches, three broken mirrors, four dagga packets, a small pocketknife, playing cards, three rizlas, six dagga joints and one vape, were found abandoned on the school grounds.
“The SANCA representative spoke about drug abuse, addiction, and their effects on daily lives, as well as how to report crimes related to drugs.
“Further interventions will be conducted at the school to root out lawlessness among the learners,” she added.
She added that the EMPD will be conducting school talks and searches of this nature across the City of Ekurhuleni.
