Residents urged to seek medical attention for mumps
Children aged five to nine years old are most commonly affected, but it can affect people of any age.

Kwatsaduza – An outbreak of mumps has been declared by the Department of Health with just over 1 300 positive cases reported.
Mumps is a highly contagious disease and spreads through contact with an infected person’s saliva or mucus.
Children aged five to nine are most commonly affected, but it can affect people of any age.
The symptoms include headache, fever, malaise and loss of appetite. The glands near the ears swell resulting in puffy cheeks and a swollen jaw and can cause severe pain.
This swelling usually lasts two to three days and is a noticeable symptom of mumps.
Parents of the affected are encouraged to seek medical attention if their children are experiencing any symptoms or should call the National Health hotline on 0800 029 999.
