Kwa-Thema residents feed volunteers

Every morning the group prepares a hearty meal in a bid to motivate the volunteers.

Kwa-Thema – A group of concerned residents rolled up their sleeves to feed the volunteers digging trenches for the emergency cable meant to restore electricity in Kwa-Thema.

The volunteers are digging the trenches from Vulcania to the Kwa-Thema Main Substation, where the transformer burned down two weeks ago.

Every morning, the group of residents prepares a hearty meal to motivate the volunteers.

A resident, Sifiso Kambule, said they felt the need to prepare lunch for the volunteers as they understand the hard labour they endure daily.

“We know they are unemployed and may not have money to afford lunch.

“Working on an empty stomach may delay them in finishing digging the trenches and restoration of electricity,” she added.

The team started by asking residents for donations. Local supermarkets donated groceries towards the cause.

“Unfortunately, the donations only last us a day and we then have to go back to begging for the next day’s meal,” she added.

They are pleading with residents to donate the little they have towards this initiative. They initially planned to feed the 30 volunteers, but the number has since grown to 50. In total, they feed over 60 people, including the appointed contractor’s employees.

Sifiso added they had also planned for the programme to run until Tuesday but it was extended to May 29.

“We are pleading for disposable plates, spoons, groceries, anything to make this initiative a success,” she added.
