Kwa-Thema’s Sunday Crew Club prepare for Comrades Marathon

The Sunday Crew Club and the Kwatsaduza community ran/walked 10km on Saturday in preparation for the Comrades Marathon and their last run before closing for winter break.

Kwa-Thema – The Sunday Crew held their last-push marathon in preparation for the upcoming Comrades Marathon.

The 10km run on Saturday took participants through streets in Rest in Peace, Vergenoeg and passed Kwa-Thema East College.

They were joined by the Kwatsaduza community, the Kopana Disabled Movement, and Mamepe Striders, among others.

It was their last run before the club’s winter break. Neo Moloto of the Sunday Crew Club said 20 runners from the club would compete in the marathon.

“We have two first-time Comrades participants and four ladies, who are social runners. We are proud of the runners for challenging themselves to conquer the ultimate race,” he said.

Moloto said the team usually invites the community to run with them every three months as an opportunity to stay connected with them and encourage a healthy lifestyle.

“Sports is not only about running the race and winning. It’s also about building a strong, united community. The next community run/walk will be after the winter break,” he said.

Sibusiso Mthembu will be the team’s bus driver at the Comrades Marathon. Moloto said this was a milestone for the team, and they would be running in the sub-12 hours bus to support him to succeed in this role.

The team has practised since last year, and most of them will give up their targeted times (sub-10/11) to run with him on sub-12.

“If the bus driver wins, it is also a win for the team,” he added.

Mthembu said he has waited for this opportunity since he started running five years ago.

“I have longed for this opportunity, and when I received the call confirming that I would be a bus driver this year, I was dumbfounded.

“My target is 11 hours and 50 minutes, just to be safe,” he said.

He added that the support from his team and community would push him to deliver all his passenger runners to the finish line on time.
