Kwa-Thema – The Salvation Army in Kwa-Thema hosted a Child Protection Week awareness programme on Saturday, to coincide with National Child Protection Week commemorated from May 28 to June 4.
The organisation invited speakers from the NPA, child welfare and local organisations which advocate for child rights.
Children were taught how to protect themselves and to speak out when abused. The day was fun for the children as they performed songs, drama, poetry and dance.
The local Salvation Army youth secretary, Nomsa Ndlovu said, “With all that is happening in our country, we need to get the children off the streets so they’re not exposed to alcohol, drugs and crime.”
Ndlovu also said children need to be protected from all forms of abuse as they belong to God.
“In Matthew 19:14, Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these,”’ she concluded.
