Menzi and Langaville primary schools went head-to-head in friendly games
The learners received a pair of shoes.
Langaville – The Kaizer Chiefs Langaville fan club, in collaboration with the Mphahlele Foundation, had a sports day and donation drive on Saturday at Menzi Primary School.
The day started with a prayer and messages of support from the ward councillor and school principal before the netball and soccer teams from the school and Langaville Primary took to the fields to show which school was best.
Menzi Primary School Governing Body (SGB) chairperson Nthabiseng Evelyn Kgatle said she was happy fans from one of the biggest clubs thought the learners were underprivileged.
“We appreciate the gesture and hope we are not the last to get donations. May they continue doing such to other schools as well,” Kgatle said.

Gladys Mavimbela, the Menzi School principal, said, “What the fans are doing for our learners is great. We have learners who come to school with worn-out shoes, nearly barefooted, and it gets hard for them to concentrate in class, especially when it’s cold.”
She said when the fans came, they inspired the learners to participate in sports to grow their skills because we can’t all be academics.
The learners started in netball, where Langaville Primary beat Menzi 11-2. It was not Menzi’s day because they also lost in soccer by 3-0. The learners received shoes before heading to lunch.
Oliver Mphahlele, the foundation’s founder, said they had the sports day to remind the learners they could have fun while learning and keep fit by playing a sport.
