Keeping more babies warm this winter

She is especially passionate about the 'fourth trimester'.

Thoughtful Motherhood is on a mission to collect as many items as possible for its Cosy Baby Drive this winter.

Her own maternal journey led Lerato Nhlapo (28) to establish Thoughtful Mothers to educate and support women pre- and post-natal.

“You don’t realise how much you need to know until you have your own child. The changes that are taking place in your body are countless. And some people do not have the support to make it through that journey.

“I wanted to start something where I can help someone, in just a few people,” she explained.

Nhlapo said her organisation scouts local clinics for women who could benefit from the services they offer.

She is especially passionate about women in the ‘fourth trimester’.

“Man, women suffer just after they give birth. They don’t understand how their bodies have changed, and how to take care of themselves. Some of them get postpartum depression while they still have to take care of a baby.

“It is a lot,” she said.

Nhlapo believes education and support can make a world of difference. As temperatures drop, Thoughtful Motherhood has started a campaign to help babies stay warm.

“There are cases where women give birth and have nothing to dress their child. So many of us have usable goods that can help people in need.

“This is an opportunity to donate those items and make a difference in someone else’s life,” she added.

Through the drive, Nhlapo hopes to collect new and pre-loved blankets, grows and onesies, tracksuits, socks, long-sleeve vests and anything to keep a baby warm.

Donations can be dropped off at 7 Puleng Street in Kwa-Thema and 579 Yvonnia Drive in Geluksdal.

The Cosy Baby Drive will run until May 31. Follow Thoughtful Motherhood on Facebook for more opportunities to get involved.
