Kwa-Thema Flames prepare for league

The team coach wants to inspire his junior players to dream big and make it in the soccer world.

Steven Jempe (53) founded the Kwa-Thema Flames soccer team in 1990.

“When I started this team, I always focused on the younger players – U11, U13, U15 and U17.

“Annually, I get a new set of hopeful children who have a passion for soccer, and my job is to teach them all the tricks in the book,” said Jempe.

Jempe said he has noticed how things have changed over the years.

“I push harder now. I ensure I keep these children off the streets by keeping them busy. There are drugs in our community, crime, and many other negative social and economic impacts.

“It is sad to watch our promising stars wash their lives away to substance abuse. We have prominent soccer players born in and around Kwatsaduza. I want to produce stars, too.

“For some time now, I have seen some of the struggles these children go through,” added Jempe

Jempe said the team is preparing for the Springs Football Association League.

“The league caters for junior players, but my struggle now is that my players do not have the proper gear to practice and participate. We need proper boots, soccer jerseys, bibs, balls, cones and transportation fees for attending league games.

“This is a tough time for my team, so we seek donations or a sponsor. We want to attend this upcoming league and aim for a win, but we do not have the necessities. My team is determined to succeed, and my drive is to keep the fire burning,” he said.

Jempe said most of his players do not come from good backgrounds.

“Donations such as food or food parcels would go a long way. These children come from various backgrounds and face various challenges. I desire to keep motivating them. They all deserve a good sports journey,” said Jempe.
