New chapter for Tsakani as headman Mbalekwa Mahlangu gets inaugurated
A historic moment unfolded in Tsakani as the Ndzundza Mabhoko Royal Palace inaugurated headman Mbalekwa Mahlangu. With traditional regalia, royal delegates, and community celebration, the event marked a powerful return to cultural roots and local leadership.
A delegation from the Ndzundza Mabhoko Royal Palace (eSigodleni) visited Tsakani Ext 15 on Saturday for the inauguration of headman Mbalekwa ‘Baly’ Mahlangu.
Chief Mbalekwa of the Amandebele kaNdunza was appointed at the end of 2023. This was after the community identified that they did not have a chief to approach with their challenges.
Attending the historic inauguration were headmen and chiefs from as far as Mpumalanga, along with members of the Ndzundza community from across Ekurhuleni.
The delegation included the amakhosikazi (elite women) from the Royal Palace and the chairperson of the iSigodlo (palace).
The delegation arrived at the headman’s home for a briefing before going to a local hall where the community eagerly awaited for the inauguration. iKosi Sofana Mahlangu, on behalf of His Majesty King Mabhoko III, performed the ceremony.
Mahlangu wore traditional attire of the amakosi wakwaNdzunza. He received a certificate confirming that he was legally and officially appointed by His Majesty King Mabhoko III.
“We thank everyone who supported us and ensured everything was successful. The ekosi’s doors are always open, and the actual work starts now. We call on the Ndzundza men to come to the ekosi to prepare for Ingoma 2026,” said Vusi Mthimunye, council secretary.
Those who gave messages of support requested the new headman to respect his position, help the community of Tsakani, which still practices its culture, and protect the customary law within the township and neighbouring areas.
