Springs Boys High debate team raises funds with community car wash ahead of nationals
The Springs Boys High debate team raised funds with a car wash as they prepare to represent the East Rand at the National Debating League finals.
The Springs Boys High School debate team held a car wash fundraiser on September 21 at the Sunshine Car Wash in Selcourt.
The fundraiser comes after the team has qualified for nationals, which will be held in Durban from October 6 to 8. In August, the team competed in the semi-finals of the National Debating League (NDL) on their school premises.
Various schools in the East region participated in six rounds after the league’s inception earlier this year. The school’s teacher and co-ordinator, Nabeelah Asmal, told the Springs Advertiser that she was shocked by the community coming out to support the school’s initiative.
She confirmed that 87 cars were washed, saying they did not expect many people to come. She added that there was boerewors that was also sold at the car wash.
“We chose a car wash as our fundraiser because it’s a fantastic way to get the community directly involved. It provides an opportunity for everyone to support our team and interact with the students they are helping,” said Asmal.
Asmal also expressed gratitude to the Engen Garage in Selcourt, along with the owners of Sunshine Car Wash, who have come on board as the proud new sponsors of Springs Boys High.
She said that they generously provided them with their facilities, which made this event possible. Beyond this car wash, the teacher said that the parents and the wider community can continue to support the team by attending their local debates to cheer on the boys and by simply spreading the word about their success.
Asmal shared, “The funds raised will be crucial as our team prepares for the national competition in KwaZulu-Natal. All the proceeds will go directly toward covering essential expenses, including travel, food, and lodging.”
She said that the funds will also help the team introduce and purchase a branded Springs Boys High kit specifically for the debating team, ensuring they look and feel their best as they represent the school and district.
