Duduza’s own star taking afro-pop and Amapiano to the world
After years of singing in choirs and shaping his talent, Kopano Magongwahas taken his music from the streets of Duduza to the global stage in London.
Duduza – Kopano Magongwa (32) is widely known on stage as K-Music SA. His music journey began in 2008 when he joined a choir called Duduza Serenade.
He was a lead singer in the choir and contributed to writing songs. He led songs like Woza Nkosi, Jerusalema, Bhekezela, Ngivikele Njalo and helped write songs like Naledi.
“After singing for more than 13 years with Duduza Serenade, I decided to become an independent artist in 2016. The inspiration behind going independent was seeing new artists at the time with similar talents in writing and singing, such as Sjava,” he explained.
“My mom, Miriam Magongwa, was my motivation. She is also a great singer and believed I could make it on my own. I started singing in 2007 while in high school, and also sang in a church choir from a young age.
“I was singing alongside my mother, conducted by Chillies Motloung. That’s when he noticed my talent and potential and invited me to join Duduza Serenade in 2008.”
Kopano looks up to artists like Sjava, Samthing Soweto, Azana, Msaki, The Soil, and Leverage. He has collaborated with many artists, both established and upcoming. Internationally, he has worked with Ade Smilz.
“Locally, I have had the opportunity to work with some of the most talented producers and artists in Duduza. One standout producer I have collaborated with is Tushot Moloi, widely regarded as one of the best in the area.
“I have also worked with Kabion Zwane and collaborated with Skills 808, Azlan, Knoxman, Kalvin Godly, KY, Potia M, Long Division, Mhlonishwa, and Okolom,” he mentioned.
Kopano has produced and worked on a song titled Pain, which is scheduled for release on October 16. The song reflects his music journey, the happiness and pain he experienced alone, and the memories he has made.
“The second song that excites me is Madibuseng. It was produced by Tushot Moloi and written by me. It’s a vibrant summer track with beach vibes and a feel-good atmosphere, perfect for enjoying time with friends. The song is inspired by a true story from my time in Durban, which makes it even more special.
“Madibuseng is officially dropping on November 6, but it’s already gaining traction and is currently being played on Lesedi FM’s playlist, which is why we decided to give it an official re-release,” he added.
After releasing these two songs, Kopano plans to work on an Amapiano EP titled Uhambi, set to drop on January 9. His vision is to establish a record label to help young musicians who cannot afford studio sessions and other music-related services. He also aims to teach what he has learned as a musician and vocal coach.

“I won an award at the Duduza Hero’s Awards in October 2023 under the category Best Afro Pop and Jazz. An interesting fact about me is that I am also an actor, model, and presenter.
“I have been cast in numerous theatre plays at Springs Theatre, Jozi Theatre, and the State Theatre. An interesting fact about my music is that it is relevant and inspiring; it speaks to the soul and heals a broken heart,” he said.
Kopano’s musical journey took him to London, UK, from May 2023 to June 2025, where he was part of an Amapiano tour called The Sunday Brunch. The tour combined artists from South Africa, Zimbabwe, London, and Nigeria, and he was the only artist representing South Africa.
“The tour was amazing. Being an artist from Duduza performing in London was a confidence booster and an incredible experience. London was wonderful; I was treated like a superstar and got to work with local artists. I did five shows and also got to see beautiful monumental places,” he said.
